Two NFC teams reportedly trying to trade up for North Carolina QB Drake Maye

Two teams are reportedly jockeying for North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye ahead of the NFL Draft on Thursday night.

During a Tuesday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," NFL Media and Fox Sports contributor Peter Schrager revealed the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants are trying to move up in the draft and take Maye. (ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. rates the 21-year-old as the third-best QB in this draft class.)

"I think Maye goes at No. 3, and I'm hearing that the Vikings and Giants are trying to get up," Schrager said. "If the [New England] Patriots aren't sold on Maye, they could trade back and draft [Michigan QB] J.J. McCarthy. That's playing a dangerous game, though."

The Patriots also need a QB, but director of scouting Eliot Wolf recently said they're open to moving down in the draft.

The Giants have the sixth overall pick in the draft, but the Vikings have two first-rounders (No. 11 and No. 23), which could give them an edge. If they made a deal with Minnesota, the Patriots could use these picks to address other needs, such as wide receiver or offensive tackle.

However, it may make more sense for the Patriots to ignore trade offers and take a QB. This offseason, they dealt former first-round pick Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars. While New England signed Jacoby Brissett to a one-year, $8M deal in free agency, he's probably a stop-gap.

If the Washington Commanders select LSU QB Jayden Daniels with the second overall pick, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer believes the Patriots will take Maye.

Even if the Vikings and Giants miss out on Maye, they could still find another QB later in the draft. The class is deep, with several passers who could succeed at the next level, including Bo Nix (Oregon), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington), Spencer Rattler (South Carolina) and Michael Pratt (Tulane).
